Revelation - Bunji Garlin
Release Date: January 15, 2002
Label: VP Records
Bunji Garlin's Revelation CD was originally scheduled for release in August 2001. After having the release date up pushed back to November, then to January 2002, I began to wonder if this CD would ever see the light of day. Well its here and well worth the wait. Bunji is in fine form on Revelation, his first CD for international distribution. You'll know that you've found something special as soon as you hear the opening track Flatliner, where Bunji returns for a near-death experience. Followed by his big hit Blessings, the vibe is set for what I'm sure will eventually rate as one of the best CDs of 2002.
Other hits include Send Dem Riddim Crazy and the socially conscious Licks, which deals with the sensitive topic of rape. Lyrics that pull no punches recorded over a terrific rhythm track combine to make Licks one of the best soca tunes to come along in a long time.
Bunji Garlin (Ian Alvarez) wrote most of the tunes on this 19 track CD. No one tells a story in song quite like Bunji Garlin. School Gyul and Bad From Sperm are prime examples of Bunji's unique style. God Is Not Far is another tune with lyrics worth listening to.
Musically Revelation is loaded with tons of great dancehall/ragga soca tunes like Hands Up, this one is pure "ear candy". There's also enough variety to provide a degree of crossover appeal. The R&B tune Bump, performed with the group Allure, and the reggae feel of More Life help make Revelation accessible to a broader audience.
If Bunji Garlin continues to produce music equal in caliper to Revelation, then it's just a matter of time until he attains legendary status along side past and present greats such as Lord Kitchener and Super Blue. Do yourself a favor by getting a copy of Revelation today.
