Damn Right - Mr. Vegas Release Date: July 10, 2001 Label: Greensleeves This CD is outstanding in places, but it has its low points too. Lets start with some of the low points. Kokane gets off to an excellent start with especially well written anti-cocaine lyrics and a solid rhythm. Then comes rapper Ayo spouting profanity and what could've been the best song on the CD goes straight into the toilet. Excise the rapper and what's left would be a great song. Another low point is Bun It (featuring Elephant Man). This one makes light of smoking marijuana. One song is against drugs and another is for them. Makes me want to screen, MAKE UP YOUR MIND! Either be for drugs or against drugs. Stand for something. However, the CD is not all bad. In fact, there are more good tunes than bad ones. One of the best tunes on the CD is the Mr. Vegas/Sean Paul number-one dancehall hit Hot Gal Today. There's also the big hit She's A Ho. Other outstanding tracks include Rise, How About That, and Easy Easy. Produced by Paul Henton, Easy Easy is a track that you will have to play over and over again. This is what all dancehall should be. Several tracks possess major crossover appeal. For instance, there's Oh What a Night (featuring Jackie) which borrows liberally from The Four Seasons' number-one disco hit of the same title. There's also I Love Dancehall which reminds me of the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts number-one pop/rock hit I Love Rock 'N Roll. However, the track with the most crossover appeal is probably the remix of Girls Time. This one uses the chorus line of the Donna Summer disco classic Love To Love You Baby sung the melody of the Four Tops big R&B/pop hit Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got. Damn Right is a bit of an enigma. How can a CD have so many great tunes and contain so much crap at the same time?
