Haiti: Quick Facts and Figures. Location: Caribbean, western one-third of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, west of the Dominican Republic. The offshore islands of Tortuga and Gonâve also belong to Haiti. Jamaica lies to the west and Cuba to the northwest of Haiti. Size: land area: 27,560 sq km (10,641 sq mi) Climate: Tropical; with intermittent rain throughout the year. Terrain: About two-thirds mountainous with the rest of the country marked by valleys, plateaus, and small plains. Time Zone: Standard Time (5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, GMT-5). Haiti does not operate Daylight-Saving Time. Capital: Port-au-Prince Languages: French (official), although the vast majority of the people speak Haitian Creole, a French dialect. Population: 7,063,722 (2002 est.) Density per sq mi: 659 Ethnic Groups: Black 95%, mulatto and other 5% Life Expectancy: 47.67 years for males, 51.17 years for females.
